Sub-Zero Refrigerator Leaking Water: Find the Source
Water inside or under your Sub-Zero? Trace it to the defrost drain, drain pan, supply line or door gasket, and learn which leaks need a technician.
A Sub-Zero refrigerator leaking water is almost always fed by 1 of 4 sources: a blocked defrost drain, a cracked or overflowing drain pan, a loose water supply line, or condensation from a door that no longer seals. Where the water appears tells you which one, and the usual fixes fall in typical ranges such as $180–$350 for a water inlet valve or water line and $150–$450 for a door gasket, with the firm quote given on site after diagnosis.
Where is the water coming from?
Dry everything, then check again after an hour. Fresh water in a dry spot points at the cause.
| Where you see water | Most likely source |
|---|---|
| Under the crisper drawers or on the fresh-food floor | Blocked defrost drain |
| A sheet of ice on the freezer floor | Frozen drain or ice maker overfill |
| Puddle under the toe kick or toward the back | Drain pan or water supply line |
| Drips along the door edge or beads on the trim | Worn or dirty door gasket |
| Water around the filter | Filter not fully seated or cracked housing |
Why does a Sub-Zero leak water inside the refrigerator?
Every frost-free refrigerator defrosts itself several times a day. The evaporator coil warms briefly, the frost melts, and the water runs through a drain tube to a pan near the compressor, where condenser heat evaporates it. When crumbs or ice block that path, the water spills back into the compartment instead.
Clues include water under the crisper drawers, ice on the freezer floor and heavy frost on the back wall. A drain that freezes again and again usually points to a weak defrost heater or defrost thermostat, a repair with a typical range of $320–$550. A unit that has shifted out of level can also send water away from the drain opening.
Why is my Sub-Zero leaking water from the bottom?
Floor water usually comes from the drain pan or the water supply. The pan can crack, get knocked out of position during cleaning, or overflow on humid days when the doors open constantly. The ice maker is fed by a small line from a shutoff valve; fittings loosen, tubing cracks and the water inlet valve can weep, usually slowly rather than all at once.
That slowness matters in Greenwich, where many kitchens have the refrigerator panel-matched into custom cabinetry over wood floors. A small drip underneath can stain a cabinet base or cup floorboards long before a puddle reaches the room.
Why does water collect at the door?
Drips at the door are condensation, not a plumbing leak. A torn, flattened or sticky gasket lets warm air in, and moisture forms on the cold surfaces. Close the door on a strip of paper at several points; if it slides out with no drag, that section is not sealing. An overfilled bin that holds the door open does the same. Gasket replacement carries a typical range of $150–$450.
What can you safely check yourself?
- Lay towels down and find the water shutoff valve, often in a neighboring cabinet or the basement below the kitchen.
- Make sure the water filter is fully seated.
- Confirm the doors swing shut on their own, and wipe the gaskets with warm, soapy water.
- Look for water or ice under the crisper drawers and on the freezer floor. Never chip ice with a knife; you can puncture the liner or coil.
- Leave the unit in place. Built-ins are heavy, anchored to the cabinetry and plumbed in.
When does a leak need a technician?
Call when water returns after these checks, ice keeps forming on the freezer floor, the supply line drips behind the unit, water reaches anything electrical, or the refrigerator also struggles to hold temperature. A diagnostic visit runs a typical $95–$149 and is credited toward the repair; common refrigerator faults fall in a typical range of $300–$750. See repair pricing for more bands; the firm quote is always given on site after diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions
Is a leaking Sub-Zero refrigerator dangerous?
It is rarely an immediate danger to the refrigerator, but standing water can damage floors and should be kept away from outlets. If the floor keeps getting wet, close the shutoff valve until the source is found.
Can I keep using my Sub-Zero while it leaks?
Usually yes, as long as it still cools and you keep the area dry. If you suspect the supply line, turn off the ice maker and close the water valve.
Why does my Sub-Zero drip more in summer?
Humid air carries more moisture, so a weak gasket or a slow-drying drain pan shows up as dripping in warmer months. The cause is usually the gasket or the pan, not the cooling system.
